Although, insurance is not required in Wisconsin; it is highly recommended and is the easiest way to comply with the "proof of financial responsibility" code. Should you choose to insure your vehicle, the following minimum guidelines have been established:

Coverage Minimum - 25/50/10

Coverage Explanation - Car insurance coverage in Wisconsin must provide a minimum of $25,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $50,000 for all injuries in an accident, and $10,000 for property damage in an accident.

Important Wisconsin Auto Insurance Laws!

1. All WI motorists must show "proof of financial responsibility" by way of a following method:

  • a motor vehicle liability insurance policy, or
  • a surety bond, or
  • personal funds, or
  • certificate of self-insurance.

2. Wisconsin auto insurance law also requires uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$50,000 for bodily injury liability coverage only.
